Note to the moderator.

Dear Moderator,

My brief for my AS media coursework was to research, plan, make and produce a music magazine. I also had to make a preliminary college magazine before hand to gain some experience on how to make the perfect music magazine.

On this blog you will find all of the tasks i had to cdo to complete my coursework appropriatley, including the preliminary task, the research on existing music magazines and all of my drafts for my own music magazine.

Thankyou.

Lucy Stoyles

Question 7; Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I have completed question 7 on a PagePlus application.

Question 6 Prezi

Question 4 and 5 Prezi

Question 3; What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Evaluation: Question 3:

There are many forms of media institutions that could distribute my music magazine. These could include existing music record companies, because it involves the artists that are being featured in the magazine and who have been signed by famous record companies. For example, Sony Records could put money towards printing for the magazine, because their artists making them money are in those magazines so (in a way) it could help promote both the artists and the record label. This is because the particular genre of this magazine (pop) is popular among the target audience, who listen to the artists being signed by the labels, therefore making them more popular and well known as a label to the audience who listen to the music. Independent record companies could also help distribute my music magazine, because it could help make them better known by the audience which could make them more money if the audience starts listening to their artists. This is also a form of cross media conversion, because the artists are being promoted by both the label and the magazine. Another form of media that could help distribute my music magazine is the internet. Due to the advance in modern technology, more and more people are starting to make more use of the internet for anything and everything, especially the target audience (teenage girls), so having a website for the magazine would help to promote the magazine around the world, because it would be available to everybody, not just people in local shops. Also, a website for the magazine could help promote the artists featured, because more details about them could be included, which could interest the readers more and attract to them to buy and read the magazine weekly. This website would be available to the whole country and others around the world, so more and more people would be able to see it which would help promote it worldwide. Another form of media that could distribute my media product would be Television. For example, MTV, because this particular music television station is also known worldwide and represents modern pop music, which is what my music magazine represents. This is also an example of cross media conversion, because both forms of media would be promoting the same artists and the same genre of music in different forms of media, which could be useful for both forms, because they are both being promoted around the world.

Question 2; How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I wanted to use a positive role model for the young readers of the magazine, to encourage them to be respectful in society. This could also be useful for promtoing the artist, because the more people who like him, the more people will buy his music and the magazine.

I completed this question on a popplet account.

Question 1; In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media media products?

On my front cover i challeneged the use of codes and conventions, because i used a more simple structure for my magazine. Also i used a more rock based title even though it was a pop magazine
For this question i compared a real magazines front cover, contents page and double page spread to mine to compar what codes and conventions were similar and different. Thus was useful for writing this question because i was easily able to identify all the codes and conventions that i used and ones that a real magazine (Q Magazine) used. This technique for identifying these conventions was more useful than just writing a paragraph on its own, because they can be seen and more easily udnerstood by me.

Amplifi front cover draft 12

I have put his picture just infront of the title so his hair is not covered. However the P in the title Amplifi is still clear what letter it is, because i pulled the title closer to the top of the page.

Amplifi front cover draft 11

On this page i have added in another black box and used the same style/ colour wiritng as the one next to it. I have also slanted it to match it to the other box. This makes it look more colourful and adds some extra style and information to the page, because its an extra piece on the page.

Amplifi front cover 10

On this page i have changed:

  • the colour of the white boxes around the writing to grey
  • added shadow around the grey boxes
  • outlined the page with a black line

Amplifi front cover 9

in this page i have changed:

  • the size of the writing in the white strip at the bottom
  • the angle of the black box at the bottom
  • the size of the price and issue number
  • the white boxes around the "freshest update" and "big"
  • the size of the kieran tomp headline quote

Amplifi pages 8

Amplifi pages 5

on this page i have changed:

  • the positioning of the pictures
  • the colours of boxes used around some forms of text
  • i have added a drop quote and made it big/ bold
  • chnaged quotes into italic writing
  • positioning of text forms; the title and tour dates
  • straightened the tour dates- make it look neater
  • the size of the wiritng to fit everything in
I will also be using different pictures of the same model, to add colour and make it look less blank. This will work better, because the pictures wont look the same. Also, i will be using either a close up and long shot, to avoid using the same mid shot that has already been used throughout the 3pages. This will also work, because it wont be the same picture for all 3 pages for the main story.

Feedback

Based on my feedback i have chamged:

  • Pictures on the front cover to fit better and look less awkward when cutting them and editing them
  • Writing on contents
  • Adding in more story titles and page numbers
  • Adding in more sub headings to make each page article more clear
  • Changing pictures on contens to make more clear

Amplifi cover, contents and dp spread update

For my front cover i removed some of the headings and made the remaining headings larger and straghter to make it seem more sophistcated. I also replaced the picture, so it was easier to his face. This was important for the audience to see what the main image actually looked like.
For my contents page, i took out some of the stroy headings to make more space. Due to this increase in space on the page, i put on a box for the remaining stories to make it straighter and (again) more sophistaved and easier to read. I also removed a small picture and made the main story image bigger to enhance the importance of that story.

Test shots

This particular shot could be useful as the main image on the front cover of my magazine, because it is a clear mid shot of the person. It clearly shows what they are wearing which can be shown by the pale background. it also clearly shows his facial expression, which could relate to the article story that he is being featured in.
This shot could be useful as an image in the contents page or in the corner of the front cover as a smaller picture. This is because the general image (the pose and structure) wouldnt seem appropriate for a main image, because its not exciting or extravigent enough.
This image could be used as a main image on the front cover or on the double page spread, because its not a proper pose but good enough to be big enough to be clearly seen.
This type of picture could be used as a small image next to an article about an interview with a particular celebrity. This is because he is clearly seen in the picture and is only smiling not fully posing.
This picture could be used as a main image, because it is a clear mid shot of the person, which means the reader can clearly identify who she is as soon as they see her on the front cover. It is useful, becasue her look to the side position helps the audience relate to her instantly, becasue it looks as if she is talking to them. They would feel both intreged and included.
This particular picture is useful, because it is more posy in the sense that she is smiling and looking straight at the camera as she knows she is being photographed.

Font Idea's and Colour scheme's

Font Idea's:

Colour Scheme's:

Pink:

White:

Black:

The three colour's i have chosen are pink, black and white. This is due to the fact that the people who answered our survey chose this one most often, making it the most popular colour scheme, and also the colours fit in well together generally. The colour pink brings excitement and brightness, whereas the colour black brings darkness and makes the magazine seem more mysterious than bubbly. The colour white helps make the darker colours more viewable to readers, due to the difference in contrast. The use of these different  colours can bring different effects and features to the magazine, making it seem more exciting and worth reading and buying by consumers. Also, these particular colours are seen to be very popular with the main generation who read these types of magazines and listen to this genre of music; teenagers and young adults. The colour black can appeal to everyone because it goed with everything and never clashes with any other colour. This colour white is used for almost everything and is not seen to be disliked by anyone so it could be an effective and popular colour. The colour pink does not always appeal to everyone, but the main gender who tend to read these magazines are girls, who usually appeal to the colour pink, thewrefore making it an ideal colour.

The font idea's i have chosen are useful, because they are relevant to the genre of music that the magazine focuses on; modern rock and pop. The main idea that i am choosing is the Italic -like writing. This is because it is the right font (in my opinion) that can match the genre of music that the magazine represents. It is not too big and bold, or dark and mysterious. It is exciting and makes the reader feel that this particular magazine is also exciting and worth reading. If the readers favourite genre of music is moder pop and rock, then they will immediately be drawn in to to read it, because they know they will be reading about the music they love and consume.
